How to download WordPress and install it in 5 steps

WordPress allows more than 30 percent of Internet users to self-host and build their own websites. However, beginners can spend more time than the famous five minutes learning how to download WordPress, let alone install it.

There are two main ways to install WordPress. The long way to go allows you to tailor the installation to your needs right from the start. On the other hand, the one-click approach is fast, but you may have to work later. In this article, we will guide you through downloading and installing WordPress. The best part is that it

only takes five steps.

Before that, let's talk about what you need!

What you need to download and install WordPress

Before you start installing WordPress, you'll need a few items:

Access to the server is required.

A suitable text editor (eg open source Atom).

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) clients such as Fibrillate. Go Daddy's dashboard also has secure file access.

Once you've met these requirements, you'll have everything you need to get started!

Ready to learn how to download WordPress?

Let's go. It's not that hard, but it still takes a while.

Download the WordPress .zip file.

Create a WordPress database and users.

Configure WP-configure.

Upload WordPress files via FTP.

Run the WordPress installer.

Depending on your experience, some of these steps may take longer than others.

1. Download the WordPress .zip file

First, you need to download WordPress itself. Fortunately, this step will be easy if you have some internet experience. Go to the WordPress download page and then click the blue button on the right.

You'll also find a link to download the .tar.gz at the bottom, but you can safely ignore it — the .zip file is all you'll need. Save it to your computer and then unzip the file before continuing.

2. Create WordPress and user database

Next, you need to decide whether to create a WordPress database and users. You may not need to do this, depending on your host, so it's worth exploring further. The answer may be in your host's documentation, or you can ask directly.

If you need to create databases and users manually, you'll also need to know which web hosting control panel you're using. Possible candidates are Plesk or c Panel. Go Daddy's web hosting plans are running late.

After a few installation steps, you can create databases and users. After that, you need to modify the WordPress core file.

3. Configure WP-configure

The next step in exploring how to download WordPress is to access the main WordPress file—wp-configure—to allow WordPress to connect to your database. This will be done when you run the WordPress installer later. However, if that doesn't work, you'll have to repeat your steps, so it's best to configure the file now.

First, open the WordPress file on your computer and rename the WP-config-sampler file to WP-configure. Open the file in your text editor of choice and find this line:

Here you need to generate a set of secret keys and paste them. This will help you secure and strengthen your WordPress installation. Once done, save your changes and prepare to upload your file.

4. Upload WordPress files via FTP

At this point, you are ready to install it on your server. You will need to access your FTP credentials, which can usually be found in your hosting control panel. From here, open File Zilla, login to your server, and navigate to the root directory in the right pane. Usually called WWW or public_html.

Navigate to your computer's WordPress folder in the left pane. Depending on whether you downloaded it to the root directory or a sub directory, follow these steps:

Root - Upload files, but not word press folder, directly to root.

Sub directories - Rename the word press folder to something unique then upload the folder and its contents to your server.

At this point, everything is done except the actual check-in
